UNKNOWN ORIGINS: Interlopia Pristinus (2024)

Photographic series featuring common clover with root systems illuminated with black light, and above-ground foliage lit full-spectrum.

The origins of the word “weed” are unknown, and the series reflects on the categorization of species like clover as “invasive” being an anthropocentric construction based mostly on Euro-Western aesthetics. Species such as clover play critical roles in ecosystem diversity and resilience: stabilizing top soil and providing nutrients and food sources for wildlife. Weeds are often the first plant life to return and facilitate regrowth after environmental destruction from wildfire, etc.
